A Freudian Dream

Freud felt that dreams were as significant as daydreams; however, he believed they stemmed from an entirely different place. He argued that dreams were a product of the unconscious, whereas daydreams stemmed from the conscious emotion, active experience, and a reflection of personality rather than any kind of resolution. Ultimately, for me, Zoya’s daydream is exactly that; this is not a resolution or even an instance of foreshadowing. It’s her expanding on her reality; it’s her idealising her present state.

There quite a few interesting elements to the dance, starting with the song choice. ‘Ishq Hua’ from Aaja Nachle, was actually based on the different love stories that were running through the film, but primarily on Imran and Anokhi. While there is no real parallel between the characters, there is only one common strand which is that Imran fights his feelings for Anokhi and isn’t particularly forthcoming.

The other key facet of this song is that it is about ‘first love’, in that there is a youthfulness and naivety involved and it’s about bringing back those ‘first rushes’, and it is free of the past and burdens; it is entirely about the new or renewal. Now Asad’s- and- Zoya’s love is nowhere in the proximity of this since their love has a great deal of intensity, and that’s without the added drama of external forces, The song for me, represented Zoya’s naivety; she has fallen in love for the first time and she has no idea how deep this runs because she’s only just realising herself. She also hasn’t understood the ramifications of loving a man like Asad or the intensity with which he reciprocates. Furthermore, Zoya is actually quite complicated herself, and wears a facade of ease, and she is believes this construct to be true. This song for me represents Zoya’s naivety and hopes; it’s her idea of how her relationship with Asad will be. It’s romanticizing a situation, which actually Asad sees far more clearly.

The curtains were another curious motif in the sequence. I know the digital artists amongst weren’t too well pleased but from a narrative perspective it made sense. Zoya is seeing her love and their relationship through rose-tinted glasses, much like the translucent red curtains. Her view of her relationship with Asad is fundamentally flawed. She knows that there are some very deep running feelings, on both sides but her idea of their relationship has a much softer and lighter Asad (most notable through her choice of clothes for him, which has him wearing jeans and white shirt. The whole sequence showed that she wanted Asad to be far more forthcoming, but with romantic overtures rather than the usual intensity he brings. She also wants the thrill of the chase, where he pursues her rather than just expects, or in Asad’s present case, takes steps back.

During this sequence, the candles didn’t hold symbolic meaning for me in the traditional sense. In this instance, it worked as part of the lighting for the sequence and that was their significance. The candles are part of the ambiance certainly, but they are also not strong enough to illuminate a dark room by themselves, and therefore a spotlight came into play. Zoya can’t actually see the problems in their relationship but rather just their feelings, which is in keeping with her view of love; however, this the fact that the darkness in her dream is only partially alight, suggests she doesn’t consider their issues to be of significance and/or can’t see their problems in their exact form. It could also be symbolic of the fact that their love is growing a darkness that shadows their love, and she (more than him) is very blissfully unaware. Admittedly, Asad’s fears stem from him repeating his father’s mistakes but he is aware that there is a dark undertone to their relationship.

I think between the lightness of the song, and the outfits and the darkness of their surroundings, they created a beautiful contrast that just reinforces that their love and relationship is mired by the past but it also marks the beginning of something new, and a future forged in the fires that are burning from the past.

Judging by Dilshad’s expressions, she definitely knows Asad’s in love with Zoya. Can’t wait to see Tanveer’s face… her plan will flop once again. BAHAHAHHA.
